These enclosures date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.C. The ancient Bambaragala Sanctuary underwent renovations during the 18th century under the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe. You can observe several vintage frescoes within this historical site.

Pettigala Peak is a well-known excursion spot around the city of Kandy. It has gained massive popularity among both domestic and overseas explorers lately. This solitary, modest peak is located in the Teldeniya district, approximately 20km from Kandy. The spectacular sight of the Victoria Dam and the breathtaking sweeping vistas have drawn numerous vacationers here.

Pettigala Peak boasts an altitude of 760m above sea level. Initially, you must travel to the town of Digana, located 15km from Kandy. From there, follow the Senarathwela-Digana route to arrive at your ultimate destination. The entire journey takes roughly one hour from Kandy proper. Prior to ascending the peak, you will pass through the Bambaragala Sanctuary.

The hiking path to Pettigala Peak commences at the old Bambaragala Sanctuary. The hike is relatively manageable, passing through a woodland setting with a moderate challenge rating. Certain sections pose a higher difficulty due to sharp inclines. You will encounter two rock shelters along the way, known as 'Situwam Lena' and 'Indrasala Guhawa'. An hour of hiking will bring you to the crest of Pettigala Peak.

The summit features tall grasses and massive boulders. There are no water springs at the peak. A spacious area allows you to wander and offers multiple vantage points. These spots present varied perspectives of the neighboring landscapes. The massive boulder positioned at the cliff's edge is what gives the peak its name, 'Pettigala'. It serves as the ultimate observation point. You can rest there and enjoy a sweeping, unobstructed view of the Victoria Dam. Additionally, several distinct summits of the Knuckles Range are visible.

The scenery from the crest is genuinely spectacular and awe-inspiring. From this vantage, a vast portion of the Kandy district is visible. Late afternoon is the ideal period to hike Pettigala Peak, providing opportunities for phenomenal sunset photography.
